A "Hot New Release" and "Best Seller Book" in Amazon charts two weeks after launch
Listed in 29 top book lists in Goodreads, including "Best YA Sci-Fi for Both Genders"
From a beguiling new voice in YA literary sci-fi/contemporary fantasy comes an astonishing novel about a group of mysterious children with the power to save lives...
Ever since young Milly Bythaway can remember, she’s had to hide who she really is – dumbing down an extraordinary genius in order to blend into the background. 14-year-old Tai Jones has been abandoned by his mother and forced to live as a homeless wanderer, but the appearance of a stray cat helps him realise he has a special gift: he can see thoughts and emotions of others, including animals, in stunningly beautiful colours. A gift that is both wonderful and awful.
When the teenagers are brought together by a mysterious old scientist for their own safety, they are told of a common and forgotten past. One of hidden experiments, and a missing family that they yearn to find. But they soon hear of the disappearance of another child, the youngest, and are faced with an impossible dilemma. Saving themselves will require confronting their deepest fears and delving into the ugly truth of their past – only to uncover something hidden in the dark...
But if they can muster the strength to overcome adversity in inventive and ingenious ways, it will bring about the most extraordinary and unexpected change. In the end, the children must work together, unleashing the full force of their intellect and genius, in an epic battle of the world's greatest minds.
The Ingenious and the Colour of Life is J.Y. Sam’s beautiful and heart-rending debut – a story that explores the fragility of human nature, with a dash of science, culture, and the natural world, engaging both mind and heart in an eclectic blend of genres.
"An impressive debut full of a rich tapestry of description and well-rounded, relatable characters. The thematic elements around nature, themes of good and bad and how love prevails make Ingenious stand out from the usual crop and really touch you in a deeper way. After three chapters I was hooked and in tears by the final page. Thank you so much for writing this book, I think everyone should read it. Now I just want to read the next one!!"

I'm absolutely rapt to have some talented young artists linked to the book - their music can be played within ebook paragraphs by tapping the underlined song/work, or within paperbacks by scanning the musical QR code in the margins - listen while you read! Peter Wright, Wolfgang Alberg, and You Xu in particular have kindly agreed to have their wonderful music included in the book - so a big THANK YOU to all of them. And please do check out their YouTube channels (links in videos below) for your further delectation!
A Note from the Author:
After years of writing, it was very exciting to release my debut young adult fiction 2020 book, but then also to discover that, two weeks after launch, it was listed as a Hot New Release and Amazon best sellers books 2020 in their December charts - I was so excited I posted photographs in my Instagram account! So if you're looking for very different new fiction books to read, do give "The Ingenious" a try, especially since the ebook has been reduced. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that readers of all ages (and not just friends and family!) found it engaging and enjoyable (you can check out their Goodreads reviews online). And whilst it might not be one of the best modern books of all time, or one of the top books of 2020, especially compared to all the excellent authors' amazing works out there, I'm sure that you will find "The Ingenious" stimulating and original!
